Avocet Energy Storage Project Unanimously Approved by City of Carson Planning Commission
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. and CARSON, Calif. (July 11, 2024) – Arevon Energy, Inc, a leading renewable energy developer, owner, and operator, has received unanimous approval from the City of Carson’s Planning Commission on the Avocet Energy Storage Project.
Avocet Energy Storage is a 200 megawatt/800 megawatt-hour (MWh) stand-alone battery energy storage system that will store energy during non-peak hours and discharge energy back to the grid when there is high demand. The project will improve grid stability and reduce the likelihood of blackouts, while helping to maximize the use of renewable energy sources. The energy discharged from the project is anticipated to power approximately 45,000 homes for up to four hours daily.
“We are excited to deliver a project that enhances the environmental, economic, and social well-being of the Carson community,” said Kevin Smith, Chief Executive Officer at Arevon. “We are grateful to the City of Carson’s Planning Commission for their support and are excited to continue moving this project forward through the entitlement process.”
In addition to enhancing electricity reliability in the region by utilizing American-manufactured battery technology, the project represents an investment of $350 million in the Carson community. The project is estimated to generate more than $35 million in property tax payments over its lifespan to support city and county government programs, including the local school district.
During the hearing, City of Carson Planning Commissioners expressed excitement about the Avocet Energy Storage Project, with Vice Chair Louie Diaz stating, “I find this to be a very significant and good project.”
Commissioner Leticia Wilson added, “This project really represents the future of energy in our communities. I want to thank [Arevon] for being a leader and bringing it to Carson.”
Avocet Energy Storage will be considered by the City of Carson City Council at its August 6th meeting. The project is anticipated to break ground in Q1 2025 and begin commercial operations in Q2 2026.
